Umstead Gallery

The Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary North Carolina, is pleased welcome artists Thomas Swanston and Gail Foster and their joint exhibit, “A Reimagined Slice in Time,” to The Art Gallery.

Residing in Atlanta, this husband and wife duo specialize in contemporary art filled with organic imagery and opulent color. While Swanston utilizes golds, silvers, and coppers in his depictions of migratory sandhill cranes, Foster illuminates her figures by surrounding them in jeweled darkness. Both concentrating on the rhythmic changes in life, Swanston says of his work, “The recurring patterns of sandhill crane migrations remind us of nature’s ability to renew and revive itself, rhythmically changing, yet remaining stable and consistent through the seasons…reminding the viewer that all journeys have a purpose and an end, no matter how long they might be or how far away from home they may take us.” Foster’s uplifting and impassioned view of the human condition celebrates the inner power of the spirit, inhabiting a deep indefinite space with pulsing luminous symbolism that invokes ancient mysteries.

Viewing The Umstead Art Collection is complimentary and open to the public. Thomas Swanston and Gail Foster’s work will be on display and available for purchase in The Umstead Gift Shop from December 1, 2018 through March 2019.
