"tWO OF A kIND"
O'Keefe and Steiglitz. Susan Rothenberg and Bruce Nauman. Nancy Spero and Leon Golub. Throughout history there have been few artist pairings - married couples who were both, first and foremost, fine artists.
We Atlantans are luck to have one of these pairings in Gail Foster and Tom Swanston - lucky not only because their existence as a couple is something of a phenomenon, but also because each of them is tremendously talented. Their work is well-recognized among collectors and gallery-goers - he known primarily for his vibrant encaustic (beeswax and pigment on panels) and gouache landscapes; she for her haunting, abstract, figurative charcoals and oil paintings. As personalities, however, they are more elusive.
